Human Resources Would be Easy Without the Humans

If you have any experience with human resources, you know what I’m talking about.

It’s the humans who mess it all up!

Don’t get me wrong — I’m not saying we should all run out and replace our employees with AI. Although, I have been watching “Westworld” and it is an intriguing concept. But I digress. I am saying that the human element complicates everything related to human resources, and I think it’s time to put it out on the table and talk about it.

If you are a business owner, think back to when it was just you. Bliss, right? No arguments about time off. You always showed up to work. No complaining to yourself about not getting an increase (okay, maybe a little on the last one). You get my drift.

The moment two people work together, everything changes. You just created the need for some form of human resources. Think about any other situation where two or more people gather: the playground, a relationship, a chamber meeting, etc. Eventually, one of them won’t agree.

Humans aren’t a bad thing. They are an incredibly exciting part of a growing business.

So, if we need humans to run our businesses but they are hard to manage, what’s the answer? Here’s the funny part: Implement human resources. Don’t worry, you don’t have to go wild and hire another full-time employee. Or maybe you do! Either way, you need to protect and support your employees by understanding the basics of human resources and putting a few things in place:

  1. Develop basic policies around:
    1. Time off.
    2. Timekeeping.
    3. Rules of conduct.
    4. Anti-harassment/discrimination.
    5. Drug/alcohol-free workforce.
  2. Develop a simple handbook, a one-stop-shop for your employees that contains all the basics about your organization.
  3. Keep your employees informed by holding regular staff meetings. Communication is the best way to build and keep an engaged workforce, especially as you grow.

Don’t let the topic of human resources scare you or conjure up visions of huge amounts of work and regulatory compliance.

Do embrace the need to support your employees by implementing HR basics now that will grow as your organization grows.
